Wild Atlantic Way Multi-Day Coach Tour from Dublin

A Wild Atlantic Way tour is built, not picked from a list. Your group chooses how many nights and which stretch of the west coast; the operator then fits the driving into each day so that it stays within the driver's legal hours. Three days covers Galway, Connemara and Clare; a week can reach Kerry or Donegal.

What the day covers

  • Galway and Connemara
  • Cliffs of Moher and the Burren
  • Dingle and the Ring of Kerry
  • Slieve League and Donegal on longer routes

When it runs

  • April to October; southern loops year-round

How the day-by-day plan is built

Start with the hotels. Send the towns and nights you want, or ask the operator to suggest them, and the driving is laid out day by day between them. The first day is usually Dublin to Galway on the M6, paying at two toll plazas on the way: one on the M4 between Kilcock and Kinnegad, one on the N6 near Ballinasloe. From there the plan heads north to Connemara and Donegal, or south through the Burren to the Cliffs of Moher, Dingle and the Ring of Kerry. Booked sites fix the timings: the Cliffs of Moher require coach groups to pre-book.

Drivers' hours and the driver's night

The EU rules on drivers' hours cover every day of the tour. Driving time is capped at 9 hours a day, and on two days a week it may stretch to 10. After four and a half hours behind the wheel the driver must stop for 45 minutes, or for 15 and then 30. Between working days the driver needs 11 hours off, which can drop to 9 no more than three times between weekly rest periods. Across a week, driving cannot pass 56 hours. If a planned day breaks these limits, the fix is a shorter day or a second driver. The driver stays overnight near your hotel; the quote states who books the driver's room.

Vehicle and luggage

The vehicles offered are a 29 to 35-seat midi coach, a 49-seat coach or a 53 to 59-seat executive coach. A full-size coach carries the whole party's cases underneath; a midi has less hold space, so luggage can decide the size. Send the number and type of cases, plus golf bags or bikes. Bags are loaded only when the group changes hotel, so two-night stays mean fewer early packs. Some loops, such as the Slea Head Drive, are too narrow for a big coach, and at Sliabh Liag in Donegal the cliff viewpoint is reached by the visitor centre's shuttle.

When is the best time for a Wild Atlantic Way tour?

April to October for the whole coast. The northern sections in Donegal are best kept to that season, while southern loops in Clare and Kerry work all year with shorter daylight.

Is the itinerary fixed?

No. There is no set route. The highlights listed are what most plans include, and the operator builds the days from your dates, hotels and booked visits.
