Giant's Causeway & Antrim Coast Coach Tour from Dublin

A 12 to 13 hour day across the border to the north Antrim coast. Motorway takes the coach almost all the way. The day covers the Dark Hedges, the Giant's Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede and the Antrim coast road, and the order has to fit the driver's hours.

What the day covers

  • Giant's Causeway
  • Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge
  • Dark Hedges
  • Antrim coast road

When it runs

  • Year-round; coast best April to October

The road north and the order of stops

The coach runs north on the M1, paying the Drogheda bypass toll, and crosses the border between Dundalk and Newry. The A1 and M1 run on to Belfast, then the M2 and A26 head towards Ballymoney. The Causeway is about 270 km from Dublin, roughly three and a half hours. Most groups see the Dark Hedges first, reach the Causeway around midday, then go on to Carrick-a-Rede. The return follows the A2 coast road through Ballycastle, the Glens and Larne to Belfast.

Booking the Causeway

The National Trust requires every coach and minibus group to pre-book through its Giant's Causeway booking office at least 72 hours ahead. A group visit is allocated two hours and includes reserved coach parking at the visitor centre. From the centre, the Blue Trail runs about 1.2 km down to the stones, around 25 minutes on foot. An accessible shuttle covers the same route for anyone who cannot walk back up.

Rope bridge and Dark Hedges

Carrick-a-Rede is capacity-capped. Every crossing needs a pre-booked timed ticket, the path from the car park is about a kilometre with steps and uneven ground, and the bridge can close in high wind. The National Trust's terms for coach groups at the bridge have changed in recent seasons, so confirm your group can cross before you build the day around it. At the Dark Hedges, Bregagh Road is closed to vehicles, the nearby Armoy lanes are closed to coaches, and there is no coach parking at the trees. The driver sets down where the operator has arranged and the group walks in.

Hours at the wheel and the border

With the coast road, this day runs close to eight hours of driving. The single-driver ceiling is nine hours, raised to ten twice a week at most, with a 45-minute stop due once four and a half hours are driven. If your timings push past that, or into the 11 hours of daily rest a driver needs, the operator adds a second driver or returns by the M2 instead of the coast. Once over the border you are in the UK: speeds are in miles per hour and the attractions take sterling. There is no routine check, but each passenger should carry photo ID, and visitors from outside Ireland and the UK should check UK entry rules for their nationality.

Does everyone have to cross the rope bridge?

No. The bridge is optional and ticketed separately. Anyone who would rather not cross can stay on the cliff path or wait at the car park.

Which months are best?

The coast is best from April to October, when daylight covers the coast road home. In winter the days are short and wind closes the bridge more often.
