Dublin to Newgrange (Boyne Valley) by Coach or Minibus
Newgrange can only be visited from the OPW visitor centre at Donore, about 50 km north of Dublin, roughly 55 minutes by coach. Most groups from the city make a day of it, adding other Boyne Valley sites around a timed tomb visit that has to be booked before anything else.

Two ways north
The faster route is the M1, reached through the Port Tunnel or the M50. It passes the toll plaza at Balgeen, south of Drogheda, and leaves the motorway at Junction 9, signed for Donore, a short drive from the visitor centre. The other route is the N2 through Ashbourne towards Slane, which has no toll and suits a day that starts or ends at Slane or the Hill of Tara, off the N3.
Book the tomb before the coach
Nobody drives up to the tombs; the OPW runs its own shuttle to them. Groups numbering 15 to 30 must settle a time slot with the OPW before the day. Tickets from third-party sellers are not accepted. Once the slot is confirmed, the departure from Dublin is worked back from it, with time for traffic on the M1. In summer, book the slot as early as you can.
Filling the rest of the day
A full Boyne Valley day from Dublin often adds the Hill of Tara, the high crosses at Monasterboice, the battlefield visitor centre near Drogheda or the village of Slane. None is far from Donore. Choose two at most, alongside the tomb tour of two to three hours, so the group is not rushed and the return to Dublin avoids the evening peak.
Can we visit the winter solstice at Newgrange?
Places inside the chamber at the solstice are allocated by an OPW lottery, not sold to groups. A group can still visit the visitor centre and the site on other days in December.
Where does the coach go during the tour?
It parks at the visitor centre, which has coach parking, and the group takes the OPW shuttle to the tombs and back.
