Dublin to Belfast by Coach or Minibus

Belfast is about 165 km north of Dublin, roughly two hours by coach on motorway and dual carriageway almost the whole way. Groups take it as a day trip, a one-way transfer to a Belfast hotel or ferry, or the first leg of a tour of the north.

Leaving Dublin

From the city centre the coach reaches the M1 either through the Dublin Port Tunnel, which coaches with more than 25 seats use free, or by the M50 from the west and south. Avoiding the weekday M50 peak, roughly 7 to 9am, saves the most time. Past the airport, the M1 runs north past Balbriggan to the tolled section around Drogheda, where the plaza takes cash, card or tag.

Across the border

At Junction 20, past Dundalk, the M1 becomes the A1 and you are in Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK. Speed limits and distances are in miles, and Belfast shops take sterling. Nobody stops the coach to look at documents, though passengers ought to have a passport or photo card with them. For an international group, the bigger question is the ETA: many nationalities need this UK permission even for a day across the border, unless they live in Ireland.

Setting down in Belfast

For Titanic Belfast, pre-booked groups of 15 or more get coach drop-off and free parking on site, in the yard behind the building off Queen's Road. For the city centre, the driver uses the signed set-down points around City Hall and the main shopping streets. Groups staying overnight should ask about secure coach parking, such as the pre-booked bays at Windsor Park off Boucher Road.

Breaks on the day

Two hours does not require a driver break, but a comfort stop can be planned for school groups or older passengers. On a day return, the driver's hours count across both legs and the time in Belfast, so tell the operator the full shape of the day when you ask for the quote.

Can we do Belfast as a day trip from Dublin?

Yes. Four hours of driving leaves time for Titanic Belfast or a city tour and a meal, with a return to Dublin in the evening.

Which tolls are on the route?

The M1 toll plaza near Drogheda, plus the M50 toll if the coach uses the western side of the M50. There are no tolls in Northern Ireland, and the Port Tunnel is free for larger coaches.
