Ireland's Ancient East Multi-Day Coach Tour from Dublin
A heritage tour with short drives between long visits. From Dublin your group works through the Boyne Valley, Kilkenny, the Rock of Cashel, Waterford and the Wexford coast over three to five days. The distances are modest, so more of each day is spent at the sites and less in the vehicle.
What the day covers
- Boyne Valley and Newgrange
- Kilkenny and the Rock of Cashel
- Waterford Viking Triangle
- Wexford and Hook Lighthouse
When it runs
- Year-round; short winter hours
Building the days around bookings
Most anchor sites here need a booked time, so the plan starts with those. Visitors cannot go straight to Newgrange and Knowth: a shuttle runs out to them from the visitor centre at Brú na Bóinne, and a party of between 15 and 30 has to book a group slot. All groups at the Rock of Cashel must pre-book, and tour operators use the nearby car park rather than driving up. Hook Lighthouse tours take up to 30 people and should be booked. Kilkenny Castle and Waterford's Viking Triangle museums are easier to fit in once those are fixed.
Roads and stopping points
The Boyne Valley is about 50 km north of Dublin by the M1. Kilkenny is about 125 km from Dublin on the M9, and Cashel is about 50 minutes from Kilkenny. In Kilkenny the coach parks on Castle Road on the approach to the castle, and at peak times Larchfield takes the overflow. In Waterford the set-down for the Viking Triangle museums is on The Mall, with coach parking at Bolton Street. The N25 Waterford City Bypass bridge over the Suir is tolled. Hook Head is at the tip of its peninsula in Wexford.
Rest rules, the driver's room and luggage
Driving here rarely approaches the daily limit, but the 11-hour daily rest still shapes the plan: a late dinner run in Kilkenny moves the next morning's start. Each night the driver sleeps close to the group's hotel; who books that room is set out on the quote. Choose between a midi coach of 29 to 35 seats, a 49-seat coach and the 53 to 59-seat executive coach. Give the operator a count of cases, and pick hotels with space for a coach to stop at the door.
Does this tour work in winter?
Yes, it runs all year. Heritage sites keep shorter winter hours, so the last tour times at Cashel and Brú na Bóinne set the end of each visit. The Rock of Cashel is exposed and can close at short notice in bad weather.
Can the order of stops change?
Yes. There is no fixed itinerary. The listed sites are typical, and the order follows the slots you secure and the hotels you choose.
