Cork to Kinsale by Coach or Minibus

Kinsale is a harbour town about 25 km south of Cork. The coach takes the road past Cork Airport and reaches the town in about 40 minutes. At the Kinsale end, narrow streets decide where your group gets off and how far it walks.

About Kinsale

  • A pretty yachting and gourmet town on the harbour, guarded by the star-shaped 17th-century Charles Fort.
  • Nearest base: Cork

The road south

From the city the coach takes the N27 South Link Road towards the airport and carries on along the R600, the Cork–Kinsale road, through farmland and down to the Bandon estuary. It is a two-lane regional road with some bends, fine for a full-size coach at a measured pace. Leaving the city at peak times causes most of the delay. Because the airport sits on the same road, Kinsale is also an easy first stop for a group just off a flight.

Parking and walking in Kinsale

Kinsale's centre is a tight web of narrow streets around the harbour, and a coach cannot stop just anywhere. The New Road car park is the town's parking for coaches and tour buses. From there the group walks into the centre, and the driver points out the way. Smaller vehicles can get closer to the harbour than a 12 to 14 m coach. Agree the pickup time and place before the group spreads out among the cafés and shops.

Charles Fort

Charles Fort, the star-shaped fort at Summercove, is about 3 km from the town, signed off the R600 about 2 km before you reach Kinsale. It has its own coach parking. It opens daily all year, with longer hours from mid-March to the end of October, and last admission is an hour before closing. Guided tours run and can be booked online. A visit and a walk round the walls fit a morning, with lunch in the town afterwards.

Can a full-size coach get into Kinsale?

Yes, as far as the coach parking at New Road and at Charles Fort. The streets in the centre are narrow, so the group walks from the car park or the driver confirms a closer set-down.

Can we visit Kinsale and Blarney in one day?

Yes. The coach crosses back over Cork to reach Blarney, so allow about an hour between the two and start early. Tell the operator at booking, as it makes a full day for the driver.

How long should we stay in Kinsale?

Two to three hours covers lunch and a harbour walk. Add an hour and a half if the group is also visiting Charles Fort.
