The N22 west
The coach leaves Cork on the N22 past Ballincollig, on a dual-carriageway stretch built to motorway standard that links with the N40 South Ring Road. Further west, the newer N22 bypasses Macroom and Ballyvourney, which took out the slowest part of the old road. Past the county bounds the road climbs and drops through the hills into Kerry, with climbing lanes on the steeper grades, and reaches Killarney from the east. A full-size coach handles this road without difficulty.
Arriving in Killarney
Killarney's centre is compact and busy with tour coaches from spring to autumn. Kerry County Council keeps an eye on the bus spaces in the centre, and coaches may only drop off, not park, in the East Avenue laybys. Send your hotel names when you book. Many Killarney hotels are on the Muckross Road, Park Road and East Avenue rather than in the centre, and the driver confirms the stopping point for each.
Planning the days after
Many groups use Cork as the arrival point and Killarney as the base. Muckross House has its own coach park, and every group must reserve before visiting. The Ring of Kerry is a full day of about 180 km on narrow coastal roads, where a coach moves more slowly than a car, so keep it separate from the transfer day. If the group flies home from Kerry Airport at Farranfore, that is 15 to 20 minutes north of the town.
A stop on the way
Under drivers' hours rules a run of this length needs no break, but a group off an early flight may want one. Macroom, about halfway, is the usual town for coffee and toilets; since the bypass opened, leaving the road to stop there adds a few minutes. Tell the operator when you book if you want the stop, so the arrival time at the hotel is planned with it.
How long is Cork to Killarney by coach?
About one hour twenty minutes on the N22 with clear roads. Leaving Cork in the evening rush, or meeting summer tour traffic on the way into Killarney, adds time.
Can we go via Blarney?
Yes. Blarney is just north-west of Cork, and the coach picks up the westbound road afterwards. Allow two to three hours at the castle and tell the operator, as it turns the transfer into a longer day.
Is Kerry Airport closer for flights home?
Farranfore, home of Kerry Airport, is a 15 to 20-minute drive north of Killarney, while Cork Airport is roughly 90 minutes away. Compare the flight times before you choose.
