The road across
The coach takes the N25 west from Wexford to New Ross on the Barrow. From New Ross the R700 runs north-west for 42 km through Inistioge, Thomastown and Bennettsbridge, where it crosses the Nore, and into Kilkenny city centre. It is a regional road through village streets and farmland. A full-size coach can use it with care, and the driver may choose a wider road for a big vehicle.
Arriving in Kilkenny
The council's coach parking runs along the east side of Castle Road, the approach to Kilkenny Castle. When that fills at busy times, coaches use the overflow at Larchfield. The Abbey Quarter, near Parliament Street at the north end of the centre, has more coach parking. Plan the drop-off by what the group wants to see first: the castle and the Design Centre at one end, St Canice's Cathedral and the Smithwick's Experience at the other.
Stops along the way
The road from Wexford passes several stops worth building in. At New Ross, the group can go aboard the Dunbrody, a full-size copy of a famine-era sailing ship. Inistioge and Thomastown are small riverside villages on the R700, and Jerpoint Abbey is near Thomastown. A day that takes in one of these on the way out and Kilkenny in the afternoon suits older groups and history societies. Book group entries ahead and give the driver the order of stops.
