About Hook Lighthouse
- One of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world, a striking 13th-century black-and-white tower guarding the tip of the Hook Peninsula.
- Nearest base: Wexford
Down the peninsula
The coach leaves Wexford on the R733 west through Wellingtonbridge, then turns south onto the R734, which runs down the peninsula through Fethard-on-Sea to Hook Head and ends at the lighthouse. The R734 is a narrow regional road shared with farm traffic and cyclists, and a coach takes it carefully. A midi coach or minibus is easier on these roads than a full-size coach, though either can make the trip.
Booking the tower
Access to the lighthouse tower is by guided tour only, and group visits are by prior arrangement with the lighthouse. The tour takes about 45 minutes and climbs 115 well-worn steps to the viewing balcony, so a level of fitness and sensible footwear are needed. Groups check in at the visitor centre reception at least 15 minutes before their tour time. The lighthouse suggests up to two hours to see the whole site, including the visitor centre in the old keepers' houses.
Building the day
Fifty minutes each way and two hours on site make a half-day. For a full day, the coach can come back by the R733 north to New Ross, where the Dunbrody Famine Ship recreates an emigrant voyage, and return to Wexford on the N25. Tours may be restricted in dangerous weather or for maintenance, so on a stormy day check with the lighthouse before the coach leaves Wexford, not after it arrives.
Can a full-size coach reach Hook Lighthouse?
Yes. The R734 is narrow, so the drive is slow and a smaller coach is easier. The driver confirms where to stop at the lighthouse when you arrive.
Is Hook Lighthouse open in winter?
The visitor centre is open all year and guided tours run seven days a week. Opening hours are shorter outside summer, so check the times for your date.
Is the tower suitable for young children or older visitors?
The climb is 115 steps, and the lighthouse asks for a level of fitness. Anyone who prefers not to climb can wait in the visitor centre and café while the others take the tour.
