About Curracloe Beach

  • A vast 11 km stretch of golden Blue Flag sand, famous as the filming location for the D-Day landing scene in Saving Private Ryan.
  • Nearest base: Wexford

Getting there

The coach crosses the Slaney on the R741 and heads north out of the town, turning onto the R742 at the junction signed for Curracloe. The R742 runs through Curracloe village and on up the coast. It is a regional road with long narrow stretches and bends, so a coach drives it carefully. Beach traffic on sunny summer weekends is heavy, and the approach to the car parks can back up.

The three access points

Curracloe has three main entrances, from north to south: Ballinesker, White Gap and Culleton's Gap. White Gap is the largest, with most of the roughly 500 parking spaces, toilets including an accessible one, and lifeguards in summer. Ballinesker has a smaller car park, toilets and the flattest boardwalk, the best one for wheelchairs. Culleton's Gap is very steep at the end of its boardwalk. Wooden sleeper walkways lead from the car parks through the dunes to the sand.

Where the coach stops

Wexford County Council lists the car parks at Curracloe but no dedicated coach bays, so the driver confirms where the coach can set down and wait. On a busy summer day the car parks fill early. For school and club groups, a morning arrival or a weekday visit makes the set-down and pickup much simpler. Agree one pickup point and one time before the group goes onto the beach, as the sand runs for kilometres in both directions.

Are there toilets and lifeguards?

Toilets at White Gap and Ballinesker open daily from May to October and on bank holiday weekends the rest of the year. Lifeguards are on duty at White Gap in the summer months.

Is the beach accessible for wheelchair users?

The Ballinesker boardwalk is nearly flat and is the best route for wheelchairs. White Gap has an accessible toilet and disabled parking spaces. Ask for an accessible minibus if anyone travels in a wheelchair.

Can we fit Curracloe in before a sailing from Rosslare?

Yes, with care. Curracloe is north of Wexford and the port is south, so allow the 15-minute run back to town and the 25-minute run on to the port, plus the check-in margin.
