Limerick to Killarney by Coach or Minibus

Limerick to Killarney is about 110 km on the N21 through west Limerick and into Kerry, then the last stretch on the N23 and N22. Groups make the trip to move base to Kerry, or as a long day out. The second option needs careful planning.

Through west Limerick

The coach takes the M20 south out of the city, picks up the N21 at Patrickswell and runs through Adare, where traffic can slow at busy times. Rathkeale is bypassed, and the N21 then passes Newcastle West and Abbeyfeale before crossing into County Kerry. At Castleisland, also bypassed, the coach turns onto the N23 past Kerry Airport at Farranfore and joins the N22 south to Killarney. There are no tolls from the city centre on this line.

Comfort stops and arrival

On a run of this length a single comfort stop is plenty. Adare, early on, suits a group that set off before breakfast, and Newcastle West or Abbeyfeale suit one later in the morning. Arriving in Killarney, a hotel forecourt is the simplest drop; otherwise East Avenue has council laybys set aside for buses to let passengers off. If the group is moving hotels, load the cases last at the Limerick end so they come off first in Killarney.

Kerry as a day trip from Limerick

A Killarney day from Limerick is a fair outing: the national park, Muckross House or a jaunting car ride fit between the two runs. Muckross House has separate coach parking, and all groups must reserve. Adding the full Ring of Kerry is different. The 179 km loop on top of the run there and back makes a very long day under drivers' hours rules. For the Ring, most groups are better spending a night in Killarney.

Can we do the Ring of Kerry as a day trip from Limerick?

It is possible but very long, with the drive from Limerick and back added to a loop that takes most of a day on its own. Ask the operator to check it against drivers' hours, or stay a night in Killarney.

Is Kerry Airport on the way?

Yes. The N23 passes Kerry Airport at Farranfore before joining the N22, so a pickup or drop at the airport adds very little to the journey.
