Through the Barnesmore Gap

From Letterkenny the N13 runs south through Drumkeen to Stranorlar, where the N15 takes over. The road crosses the River Finn at Ballybofey and climbs through the Barnesmore Gap, south-east of the Bluestack Mountains, before skirting Donegal Town on its bypass. A 2+1 bypass of Ballybofey and Stranorlar is planned; until it opens, the coach passes through both towns.

Ballyshannon to Sligo

Below Donegal Town the N15 runs through Laghey and Ballintra, crosses the Erne on the Ballyshannon bypass and passes Bundoran. It enters Sligo through Grange and Drumcliffe, with Benbulben's flat top ahead. The whole route is toll-free and stays inside Ireland, so there is no border crossing.

Stops and timing

At under two hours the run needs no driver break, but Donegal Town, a little short of halfway, is the usual place to stop. A school or tour group can also pause at Bundoran by the sea. If you are moving mid-tour, check hotel check-in times in Sligo; arriving early with cases means a wait unless the hotel can store bags.

Arriving in Sligo

Sligo County Council's coach facility on Markievicz Road lets a coach set down and collect passengers close to the town centre, and it is kept for coaches only. For hotels at Rosses Point or Strandhill, the coach continues to the door. Where a group is split across several hotels, the driver drops in turn on the way in, starting in the town centre.

Can we stop at Yeats's grave on the way?

Yes. Drumcliffe churchyard is on the N15 about 8 km before Sligo, and 20 to 30 minutes is enough to see the grave, the high cross and the church. It makes a natural last stop before the hotel.

How long does the trip take with a stop?

About an hour and three-quarters of driving, plus 30 to 45 minutes for a break in Donegal Town. Allow two and a half hours door to door for a relaxed transfer.
