Letterkenny to Slieve League by Coach or Minibus

Slieve League, or Sliabh Liag, is a range of sea cliffs on the south-west Donegal coast near Teelin, rising close to 600 m. From Letterkenny it is a long run across the county, and a full-size coach goes only as far as the cliffs centre; the last stretch is by shuttle or on foot.

About Slieve League

  • Among the highest and most spectacular sea cliffs in Europe, rising almost 600 metres straight out of the Atlantic in southwest Donegal.
  • Nearest base: Letterkenny

Across Donegal

The coach heads south on the N13 to Stranorlar and Ballybofey, then takes the N15 through the Barnesmore Gap to Donegal Town. From there the N56 runs west past Mountcharles and Dunkineely to Killybegs, and the R263 continues through Kilcar to Carrick, with a local road down to Teelin. The national roads are reasonable; west of Killybegs the R263 is a narrower coast road and progress slows.

Coach access at the cliffs

Fáilte Ireland notes that access to the cliffs is unsuitable for large coaches. The Slieve League Cliffs Centre on the Bunglass Road at Teelin has free parking with room for coaches, and a guided shuttle runs from its car and coach park, and from Carrick, up to the viewing point at Bunglass. In the high season the road to the upper car park is restricted to the shuttle, residents and authorised vehicles. Book shuttle seats with the date, time and numbers.

Time on site

The shuttle guides talk about the history and wildlife of the area on the way up. Allow two to three hours at Sliabh Liag for the shuttle, the viewpoints and a meal at the centre, which serves hot food until 4pm. The viewing points are exposed, and in low cloud the cliffs can disappear entirely, so check the forecast that morning.

Planning the day

This is a full day from Letterkenny, with three hours or more of driving in total. Killybegs, a busy fishing port, is a natural comfort stop on the way out, and Donegal Town on the way back. Start early in summer, when the shuttle is busiest, and keep the return relaxed rather than rushing the coast road in fading light.

Can our coach drive to the Bunglass viewpoint?

No. A large coach stops at the Slieve League Cliffs Centre, and the group continues by shuttle bus or on foot. Smaller vehicles are also restricted in the high season, so plan around the shuttle.

How do the cliffs compare with the Cliffs of Moher?

The cliffs centre describes them as almost three times the height of the Cliffs of Moher. There is no large visitor complex at the edge, so the visit feels more remote and depends more on the weather.
