About Fanad Head Lighthouse

  • One of the most photographed lighthouses in the world, perched on a dramatic clifftop headland north of Letterkenny between two loughs.
  • Nearest base: Letterkenny

The road north

The lighthouse's own directions take you from Letterkenny to Ramelton and on to Milford, where the R246 turns off towards Kerrykeel. The R246 continues up the peninsula, and the last stretch to the headland follows the coast. These are regional and local roads, winding and narrow in places, shared with cars and cyclists in summer. A midi coach or minibus is the easier fit, and the operator should check a full-size coach against the route first.

At the lighthouse

The site has free parking with 33 car spaces and two coach bays, plus toilets, an accessible toilet and a coffee and craft shop. With only two bays, it is worth booking your tour time so the coach arrives into a free bay. Guided group tours last about 45 minutes, and groups of 15 or more must pre-book. Opening days vary by season: daily in summer, and on fewer days in spring, autumn and winter.

The tower climb

Children must be at least 1.2 m tall to climb the tower. The ground-floor exhibition and the base of the tower are accessible, but the lighthouse is an old building and the climb does not suit people with mobility difficulties. A moderate level of fitness is enough for everyone else, and the top gives views across North Donegal and Lough Swilly.

Making a day of it

Rather than retrace the same road, a full-day loop can return by Portsalon and Rathmullan along Lough Swilly. Ask the operator which roads suit your vehicle before you fix the plan. The headland is exposed to Atlantic weather, so wind and rain gear is worth packing in any season.

Can a 49-seater coach reach Fanad Head?

The lighthouse has coach bays, so coaches do visit, but the approach roads are narrow and winding. The operator checks the route against the vehicle before confirming; for groups under 25, a midi coach usually suits the roads better.

How long is the visit?

Plan on roughly ninety minutes at the lighthouse for the 45-minute tour, time outside on the headland and the coffee shop. With 50 minutes each way, a half day from Letterkenny is realistic.
