City of Derry Airport to Letterkenny by Coach or Minibus

City of Derry Airport is at Eglinton, about 7 miles north-east of Derry on the A2, in Northern Ireland. Letterkenny is across the border in County Donegal, so this short transfer starts in the UK and finishes in Ireland.

Route

The coach leaves the airport on the A2 towards Derry, crosses the River Foyle and follows the Buncrana Road to the border at Bridgend. There the A2 becomes the N13, which bypasses Newtowncunningham and Manorcunningham, partly on dual carriageway, on its way to Letterkenny. Road signs and speed limits are in miles per hour on the Northern Ireland side and in kilometres per hour in Donegal.

At the airport

The airport has one terminal, with the car park directly outside. Coaches and minibuses picking up or dropping off use the terminal forecourt under the airport's terms for passenger service vehicles, and the operator arranges that access. Send your flight number so the collection is built around the arrival.

Crossing the border

There are no routine checks between Northern Ireland and Ireland, and the coach crosses at Bridgend without stopping. Irish and British citizens travelling within the Common Travel Area should still carry photo ID. Visitors of other nationalities should check UK entry rules, including whether they need an Electronic Travel Authorisation. Money changes too: sterling at the airport, euro in Letterkenny.

Letterkenny end

Letterkenny has no railway. Most groups stay in the town centre around Main Street or at hotels on the Port Road, and the coach delivers to each. For groups heading straight out to Glenveagh, Fanad or Inishowen, the transfer can continue without a stop in town.

Is Derry the closest airport to Letterkenny?

Yes, at about 40 minutes. Donegal Airport at Carrickfinn, on the west coast, is about 45 minutes by road, and Dublin Airport about three hours.

Do we need euro or sterling?

Both, if you plan to spend at each end. The airport and Derry use sterling; Letterkenny and the rest of Donegal use euro. Cards are widely accepted on both sides of the border.
