About Glenveagh National Park

  • A vast wilderness of mountains, lakes and Ireland's largest herd of red deer, centred on a romantic Victorian castle and gardens beside Lough Veagh.
  • Nearest base: Letterkenny

Route

The national parks service directs visitors from Letterkenny along the N56 through Kilmacrennan, then onto the R255 towards Gweedore to the park entrance. The N56 is a good national road; the R255 is narrower and runs through open hill country. The coach parks at the visitor centre, which is as far as private vehicles go.

Shuttle and castle

A shuttle bus runs from the visitor centre to Glenveagh Castle, and two of the buses are electric and fully wheelchair accessible. Groups book online, choosing return or single shuttle seats and, if wanted, a self-guided visit inside the castle. Guided castle tours also run, with the last one in the late afternoon. The castle is closed on some weekdays, so check the days for your date before booking.

On foot

Walkers can follow marked trails from the visitor centre to the castle instead of taking the shuttle, along Lough Veagh beneath the mountains. One option is the shuttle out and the walk back. The park holds Ireland's largest herd of red deer, and the autumn rut draws wildlife groups in September and October.

Timing

The visitor centre opens at 9.15 and closes at 5.30, and its restaurant opens from April to October. A half day covers the shuttle, the castle and the gardens; a full day leaves time for a longer walk. Weather in the Derryveagh Mountains changes quickly, so pack rain gear.

Can the coach drive us up to the castle?

No. Private vehicles, coaches included, stop at the visitor centre. The park shuttle covers the road to the castle, and the accessible buses suit passengers who cannot walk the distance.

Does a group need to book?

Yes. Group shuttle seats and castle visits are booked online with the park in advance. Book those first, then fix the coach times to match.
