Dundalk to Newry by Coach or Minibus

Newry is about 25 minutes north of Dundalk, across the border in County Down. Most groups going there are shopping, especially before Christmas, or meeting a connection north. It is the shortest cross-border run from Louth, and the only things that really change on the way are the currency and the road signs.

The road

The coach takes the M1 north from Dundalk. At the border the motorway becomes the A1, and the coach comes into Newry from the south. There is no toll on the way. Once over the border, the speed limits and distance signs are in miles per hour and miles. A coach makes the trip easily, though the city centre streets around the shopping centres are busy on Saturdays and in December.

The border and the paperwork

There is no checkpoint, and no immigration control on the land border. Irish and British citizens need nothing extra, though carrying photo ID is sensible. Other nationals who are not legal residents of Ireland need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation or visa before they cross, even for a shopping trip. Newry uses sterling, so the group should bring sterling or cards. Mobile phones may switch to a UK network near the border.

Where the coach stops

Newry's two main shopping centres, The Quays and Buttercrane, have more than a thousand car parking spaces each, laid out for cars rather than coaches. The Newry Bus Centre sits on the Mall, within walking distance of both. Your driver confirms the set-down and collection point for the size of vehicle. Agree a firm collection time with the group, since shopping trips tend to run late.

Do we need passports to go to Newry?

Irish and British citizens do not, though photo ID is useful. Other visitors need a UK ETA or visa unless they are legal residents of Ireland.

Can we pay in euro?

Newry is in the UK and shops charge in sterling. Bring sterling or a card rather than relying on shops taking euro.

How long does the run take?

About 25 minutes from Dundalk. Allow more for city-centre traffic on a Saturday or in the weeks before Christmas.
