Dundalk to Cooley Peninsula Loop by Coach or Minibus

The Cooley loop is a half day out of Dundalk around the mountains and shores of the peninsula, the country of the Táin. It is not a long distance. The time goes on stops and on slow roads, so the order of the day matters more than the mileage.

About Cooley Peninsula

  • A rugged headland of mountains and sea between Dundalk Bay and Carlingford Lough, setting of the ancient epic the Táin Bó Cúailnge.
  • Nearest base: Dundalk

How the loop runs

The R173 almost circles the Cooley Mountains. From the Ballymascanlon roundabout the coach follows Dundalk Bay east to The Bush. The R175 then branches off to Greenore port, and the R176 links back up to Carlingford. From Carlingford the R173 runs north-west along Carlingford Lough through Omeath to the border, where it becomes the B79 into Newry. Slieve Foye, at 589 metres the highest point on the peninsula, stands over Carlingford and the lough.

Stops worth building in

Proleek Dolmen, near Ballymascanlon, is a portal tomb with a capstone estimated at 35 tonnes, reached on foot from the nearest parking. Carlingford takes the longest stop: the lanes, King John's Castle, the Holy Trinity heritage centre in a restored medieval church, and lunch. Omeath, at the end of the greenway, is quieter and works as a pickup point. A half day usually covers the dolmen, Carlingford and the lough shore, with an hour or two in the village.

Getting back to Dundalk

There are two ways to close the loop. The coach can come back along the coast the way it came, or carry on from Omeath into Newry and return south on the A1 and M1. The second crosses briefly into Northern Ireland, so non-Irish and non-British visitors need a UK ETA or a visa. The minor mountain roads through the middle of the peninsula are narrow and steep, and the driver decides whether the vehicle should use them.

How long does the loop take?

Plan for a half day, about four hours, with stops. Drive time alone is much shorter; the stops and the slow regional roads take the rest.

Does the loop cross into Northern Ireland?

Only if you return through Newry. Coming back along the coast keeps the whole trip in County Louth.

Which vehicle suits the Cooley roads?

A midi coach or minibus handles the lanes in Carlingford and the smaller roads better than a full-size coach. Tell the operator your group size and the stops you want.
