Waterford to Tramore by Coach or Minibus

Tramore is a seaside town 13 km south of Waterford city, about 20 minutes away. It is a half-day or a full day for school groups, clubs and families, and a base for groups who would rather stay by the sea than in the city.

The road down

The R675 starts in Waterford city centre and runs south-west to Tramore. It is a busy commuter road at peak times and carries the beach traffic on warm summer days, when the last stretch into the town slows. A coach of any size can make the run. In summer, start mid-morning and leave before the late-afternoon rush back to the city, and the 20 minutes holds.

What there is for a group

Tramore has a 5 km sandy beach facing Tramore Bay. The Doneraile Walk, laid out as a private promenade in the early nineteenth century, runs along the cliffs with views over the bay, the Backstrand and the coast towards Brownstown Head and Great Newtown Head. On Great Newtown Head the Metal Man stands on top of one of the pillars built as a mark for ships, arm outstretched. Groups usually split between the beach and the walk.

Stopping in Tramore

Waterford City and County Council runs pay-and-display parking on the main Prom and lower Prom in summer. Where the council has marked bus and coach spaces, the sign gives the maximum stay. The driver uses a coach space where one is free and otherwise confirms a set-down close to the beach. Give the group a clear pickup time and place: on a crowded summer day, a group scattered along a 5 km beach takes a while to collect.

Is Tramore suitable for a school beach trip?

Yes. The run is short, so the day is spent on the beach and the walks rather than on the road. Bring a group list and agree a single meeting point, as the beach is long.

Can we combine Tramore with the Copper Coast?

Yes. The R675 carries on west from Tramore along the Copper Coast to Dungarvan, so Tramore can be the first stop of a longer coast day.

Is Tramore a good base instead of the city?

Groups who want the sea stay in Tramore and travel into Waterford for the Viking Triangle and the crystal factory. Twenty minutes each way is easy to plan around.
