The N22 south
The coach leaves Tralee on the bypass and heads south-east on the N22 through Farranfore, where the N23 branches off to Kerry Airport and Castleisland, then on into Killarney. There are no tolls. The run takes about 35 minutes; summer traffic on the way into Killarney, and events in the town, add to it. A rail line also connects the two towns, which suits a small group going only to the town centre.
A day in the national park
Many Tralee groups come for Killarney National Park. Muckross House parks coaches apart from cars, free of charge, and every group needs a reservation. Ross Castle, just off the Kenmare road (N71) 2 km out of town, opens from early March to early November, and its interior is by guided tour only, with a maximum of 15 per tour. Jaunting cars and lake boats leave from the park and Ross Castle, so the coach can drop at one point and collect at another.
Evenings and match days
Concerts and conferences fill the Gleneagle INEC Arena on the Kenmare road, a kilometre out of the centre, and Fitzgerald Stadium hosts Kerry football championship games. Coach traffic after an event is heavy, so agree a fixed pickup point and time before the group goes in. Town-centre drops use the bus laybys on East Avenue, which are for setting down, not parking.
Can we fit Muckross House and the Gap of Dunloe into one day from Tralee?
It is tight. The Gap with its boat trip is most of a day on its own. Pair Muckross with Ross Castle or Torc Waterfall instead, and keep the Gap for a separate day.
Does the coach wait in Killarney while we visit?
That depends on the booking. The driver can stay with the coach or return at a set time, and the operator sets out the terms on the quote.
