Kilkenny to Rock of Cashel by Coach or Minibus
The Rock of Cashel is about an hour west of Kilkenny, in County Tipperary. It is one of the best-known heritage sites in the country, and the OPW asks every group to book. A visit takes an hour or more, so a Kilkenny-Cashel trip fills a morning or an afternoon.

Two ways west
There are two practical routes. The direct line takes the N76 out of Kilkenny and the R691 through Killaule to Cashel, 46 km of regional road with plenty of bends. The other takes the R693 through Freshford to Urlingford and joins the M8 south to Cashel. It is longer in distance but usually quicker, and easier going for a large vehicle. The operator chooses based on the vehicle and the time of day.
Parking and the walk up
Tour operators are asked not to drive up to the Rock itself but to use the public car park nearby, which has coach parking. From there the group walks up to the entrance. The Rock stands high and unsheltered, and Heritage Ireland warns that it may shut with little warning when the weather turns. Walkways are uneven and some doorways are low, so sensible shoes matter.
Booking and the visit
All groups must pre-book with the OPW. Cormac's Chapel can be seen only on a guided tour, and capacity is limited, so ask for it when you book. The site opens at 9:00 all year and closes earlier in winter than in summer, with the summer timetable running from mid-March to mid-October. Expect to spend an hour to an hour and a half on site.
Do we need to book?
Yes. Heritage Ireland asks all groups to pre-book, and the guided tour of Cormac's Chapel has limited places.
Can the coach drive up to the Rock?
No. Coaches use the public car park below the Rock, and the group walks up. The driver shows you the path.
What if the weather is bad?
Wind and storms can shut the site on the day. Check the Heritage Ireland notices that morning and keep a backup stop in mind.
