Dublin Airport to Kilkenny by Coach or Minibus

A wedding party, a hen weekend or a touring group landing at Dublin and heading for Kilkenny has about an hour and three quarters on the road. It is motorway nearly all the way. What makes the day work is a clean airport pickup and knowing where a coach can stop in a medieval city.

Pickup at Dublin Airport

The terminal bus stops are reserved for scheduled routes; a hired coach meets its group in Zone 16 instead. Once everyone has collected their bags, they walk round to Zone 16 and board. If guests are arriving on different flights, list each flight and the number of people on it. The operator can then decide whether one pickup or two makes more sense, rather than holding an early group for hours in the coach park.

Motorway south

From the airport the coach heads south on the M50, through the electronic toll stretch between Blanchardstown and Lucan. At the Red Cow it joins the N7 and M7 towards Naas, and just past Naas it branches onto the M9 for Kilkenny and Waterford. The M9 is a long, steady motorway with little to slow a coach. The final few kilometres into Kilkenny are on the N10 ring road around the city.

Stopping in Kilkenny

The council's main coach spaces line the east side of Castle Road, on the approach to the castle. At peak times there is an overflow coach area at Larchfield, and there is further coach parking at the Abbey Quarter, near the north end of the Medieval Mile. High Street and the lanes off it are narrow, so for town-centre hotels the coach often stops at one of these points and guests walk the last stretch with their bags.

Weddings and country hotels

Plenty of Kilkenny groups are not staying in the city at all but in country-house hotels and wedding venues around Thomastown and the Nore valley. Those roads are narrower and slower than the motorway. Send the operator the venue name and its entrance, and ask whether a full-size coach can reach the door or whether a midi coach suits the lane better.

How long does the transfer take?

About an hour and three quarters to Kilkenny city. Weekday traffic on the M50 and a country venue beyond the city can both add time.

What happens if our flight lands late?

Give the operator each flight number; the collection follows the real touchdown time, not the timetable. Waiting terms are on the quote, so read them before you book.

Can the coach reach our hotel on the Medieval Mile?

Often not to the door. The driver uses the council coach parking on Castle Road or at the Abbey Quarter, and guests walk a short way.
