Dingle Peninsula & Slea Head Coach Tour from Killarney

From Killarney to the far end of the Dingle Peninsula and back, in about nine hours. Your group sees Inch Strand, Dingle town, the Slea Head loop with the view to the Blaskets, and Gallarus Oratory. The loop is narrow, so this tour runs only in a minibus of 16 to 19 seats.

What the day covers

  • Inch Strand
  • Dingle town
  • Slea Head Drive and the Blasket view
  • Gallarus Oratory

When it runs

  • Year-round; Slea Head road weather permitting

The road west

Dingle is about 70 km from Killarney, roughly an hour and a quarter. The usual way in goes along the south shore of the peninsula, with a stop at Inch Strand, then through Annascaul into Dingle town for a break. The driver confirms the set-down in town. West of Dingle you are in the Gaeltacht, and road signs use the Irish names: An Daingean or Daingean Uí Chúis for Dingle, Ceann Trá for Ventry.

The Slea Head loop

Local signs require the Slea Head Drive, the R559, to be driven clockwise only, so do not follow a sat nav that says otherwise. The loop runs from Dingle through Ventry to Slea Head, Dunquin and the Blasket view, then Ballyferriter, and back towards Dingle. It is genuinely narrow, with cliff edges and places where two vehicles barely pass. A 49-seater cannot complete it, which is why this tour is limited to a minibus. The driver picks the safe places to pull in for photographs.

Gallarus Oratory

Gallarus is the last stop on the loop. The OPW manages the oratory and has its own car park. A privately run visitor centre beside it has a larger car park that takes coaches, plus toilets, a shop and a short audio-visual show. Allow 30 to 45 minutes. After Gallarus the group heads back to Killarney the way it came, over Inch or through Annascaul.

Conor Pass and the weather

The Conor Pass closes in high wind. Vehicles over 2 tonnes may not go north-east of the summit car park, and there is a length limit, so coaches cannot cross the pass. If the group wants the view, ask the operator whether your vehicle can reach the summit from the Dingle side and turn there. Bring waterproofs and a warm layer, because Slea Head takes the full Atlantic weather. The day suits small groups, families and returning visitors who have already done the Ring of Kerry.

Can we do this tour in a full-size coach?

No. A 49-seater cannot complete the Slea Head loop. Larger groups split across two minibuses, or choose the Ring of Kerry, which takes full coaches.

Can we stop at the Blasket Centre?

Yes. The Blasket Centre is at Dunquin, on the loop. Check its opening times for your date, because it is seasonal.
