Cliffs of Moher & Burren Coach Tour from Galway

From Galway the Cliffs of Moher are close enough that the day has room for the Burren as well. Your group drives south along Galway Bay, crosses the limestone country of north Clare, spends a couple of hours at the cliffs, and returns by another road.

Order of the day

The N67 leaves the Galway road at Kilcolgan and runs through Kinvara, where Dunguaire Castle stands on the shore, then on to Ballyvaughan. From there the R480 climbs into the Burren to Poulnabrone Dolmen. A stop at Aillwee Cave or the Burren Perfumery follows, then the cliffs. The cliffs are about 75 km away, around 90 minutes without stops. Many groups come home on the coast road through Fanore for a different view. Roads in the Burren are narrow in places, but the route is planned for vehicles up to a 53-seat executive coach.

Booking the Cliffs of Moher

Book the Cliffs of Moher Experience before the day. The site requires it for any coach and for any party above nine people, and those bookings go through its group team rather than the online shop. Coaches turn in at their own entrance and drop the group without anyone needing to cross the road. On site, allow about two hours, as the visitor centre suggests: 3.5 km of paved paths, O'Brien's Tower, and an exhibition built into the hillside. In strong wind some paths shut.

Poulnabrone and the smaller stops

Poulnabrone Dolmen is a portal tomb a short walk from a roadside car park off the R480. Entry is free and it is open all year, but the car park is small and gets busy with coaches by midday in summer, so it is worth reaching early. Twenty to thirty minutes is enough. Dunguaire is usually a photo stop from the shore. The Aillwee or Perfumery stop runs to about an hour with time for coffee.

How is this different from the Cliffs of Moher day from Dublin?

It is about two hours shorter, because Galway is far nearer the cliffs. The saved time goes into the Burren stops rather than motorway driving.

What if it is foggy or windy at the cliffs?

Visibility changes by the hour, and staff tell visitors the conditions on arrival. Bring windproof layers and leave umbrellas behind. If paths close, the indoor exhibition is still open to the group.
