Galway to Cliffs of Moher by Coach or Minibus

Galway to the Cliffs of Moher crosses from Galway Bay to the Clare coast. There are two ways to drive it: the motorway route through Ennis, or the N67 along the edge of the Burren. Which one you pick shapes the rest of the day.

About Cliffs of Moher

  • Ireland's most-visited natural attraction, 214-metre sea cliffs on the Clare coast reached by a scenic hour-long coach run south.
  • Nearest base: Galway

Two routes south

The motorway route runs east on the M6 to junction 18, south on the M18 past Gort to junction 12 at Ennis, then west on the N85 through Ennistymon and Lahinch to the R478 and Liscannor. The coast route follows the N67 through Kilcolgan, Kinvara and Ballyvaughan, over the Burren to Lisdoonvarna, then along the R478 past Doolin. The visitor centre quotes both, and the motorway is only a little faster. Many groups go out one way and back the other.

Booking the visit

Groups of ten or more travelling by coach must have their visit booked at least 72 hours in advance through the Cliffs of Moher Experience bookings team; online tickets are for smaller parties. Fix the slot before the coach, since the departure from Galway is set from it. The coach park is on the cliffs side of the R478, separate from the main car park opposite, with toilets at its entrance.

Time on site

The centre recommends about two hours. Admission covers the cliff paths, about 3.5 km in all, O'Brien's Tower and the exhibition, and the building is wheelchair accessible. With two hours at the cliffs and the drive each way, a Galway day still leaves room for one more stop, such as Doolin or Poulnabrone, within the driver's hours.

Vehicle and timing

Vehicles up to a 53-seat executive coach run this trip. In summer the cliffs are busiest from late morning, so a group that leaves Galway early arrives ahead of the crowds. Winter days are short; if you take the N67 through the Burren, plan to be on the road home before dark.

Is it a day trip or a transfer?

Either. Most groups return to Galway the same day, but the cliffs also lie on the way south, so a group moving on to Ennis, Limerick or Kerry can stop there with its luggage in the hold.

Does the coach wait at the cliffs?

How the driver waits on a day trip is set out on the quote. Give the operator the booked arrival time so the whole schedule is planned around it.
