Galway to Dublin by Coach or Minibus

Galway to Dublin is the main east-west motorway journey in Ireland, about 210 km on the M6 and M4. The drive itself is straightforward, with two toll points; most of the planning sits at the Dublin end, especially when a flight is involved.

Motorway and tolls

The coach leaves Galway on the M6, passing Athenry, Loughrea, Ballinasloe and Athlone, and joins the M4 near Kinnegad for the final run east. Two tolls lie on the way: the M6 Galway to Ballinasloe plaza at Cappataggle, and the M4 Kilcock to Kinnegad toll. A coach heading for Dublin Airport by the M50 also passes the barrier-free toll between junctions 7 and 6.

A stop on the way

Two and a half hours sits well inside the four and a half hours a driver may drive before a 45-minute break, so the coach can run straight through. Groups with children or older passengers often still want a stop, and Athlone, roughly halfway, suits it: the town sits on the Shannon just off the motorway.

Dublin Airport

For a departing flight, the coach may drop the group at Terminal 2, on the inner lane of the departures road beside check-in. Arriving passengers are picked up in one place only, the Zone 16 coach park, and the group walks there from arrivals to find the driver. Traffic on the M50 and the airport approach is heavy at peak times, so leave a margin on top of the drive time.

Dublin city centre

For city hotels and venues the coach stays on the N4 into town and does not use the tolled part of the M50. Dublin City Council provides signed coach stops for setting down and picking up, such as Nassau Street, and separate coach parking bays with a two-hour limit. Bus gates along the inner quays, and a round-the-clock gate at College Green, keep through traffic out, so the driver plans the last kilometre around them.

What if we are delayed on the way to a flight?

Build the margin in at the start. Tell the operator the flight time and terminal, and the departure from Galway is set with spare time for the M50. On bank holidays and Friday evenings, leave earlier.

Can the coach collect us at Dublin Airport for the trip west?

Yes. Send the operator your flight number; they plan the collection around the landing time, and the driver meets the group at the Zone 16 coach park.
