Athlone to Clonmacnoise by Coach or Minibus
Clonmacnoise is about 25 minutes south of Athlone, across the county line in Offaly. The drive is short and simple. What shapes the trip is the site itself: no drop-offs, limited space for big vehicles, and a booking rule for larger groups. Plan those first and the road looks after itself.

About Clonmacnoise
- One of Ireland's greatest early-Christian monastic sites, a riverside cluster of ruined churches, round towers and High Crosses founded in 544.
- Nearest base: Athlone
The road south
Leave Athlone on the N62, the Birr road, and turn off on the local roads that run down to the Shannon. Heritage Ireland puts the site about 21 km from Athlone. The last few kilometres are narrower than the national road, so a full-size coach takes them more slowly than a car would. If you are gathering people in town first, Athlone Castle has a public coach bay beside it for stops of up to 15 minutes, and there are four bus bays on Elliott Road, opposite the Luan Gallery.
No drop-offs, so parking decides the arrival time
The OPW does not permit drop-offs at Clonmacnoise. The vehicle has to have a parking space before anyone gets off, and space for vehicles over 5 metres long is very limited. The site asks visitors to avoid the busy hours between 10:30 and 15:00 where they can. For a coach or larger minibus, an early start from Athlone that arrives close to opening time gives the best chance of a space. Tell the operator the time you want to arrive and the driver will judge it against the season.
Booking and what is open
Groups of 15 or more can have a guided tour, but only if it is pre-booked with the OPW team at Clonmacnoise. Individuals and small groups visit on a walk-in basis, without a guide. The visitor centre has been closed for essential works, with a temporary welcome hub and public toilets in its place, and the site has announced a period of full closure while the car park is rebuilt. Check the Heritage Ireland page before you fix a date.
On the ground
The monastic site spreads across open ground on the east bank of the Shannon: ruined churches, two round towers, high crosses and a graveyard still in use. Paths are uneven and some doorways are low, so school groups and older travellers need sensible shoes. Most groups spend an hour or a little more on site. Pair it with Sean's Bar, the castle or a Shannon cruise back in Athlone to make a half day.
Can the coach drop us at the gate and come back later?
No. Clonmacnoise does not allow drop-offs, so the vehicle parks on site for the length of the visit. Large-vehicle spaces are few, which is why the arrival time matters.
How long does the trip take?
About 25 minutes each way. With an hour or so on site, the return trip fits easily into a morning or an afternoon.
Do we have to book?
Only if your group is 15 or more and wants a guided tour, which must be pre-booked with the OPW. Smaller parties walk in. Check opening hours and closure notices first.
