Sligo to Strandhill by Coach or Minibus
Strandhill is a surf and seaside village about 8 km west of Sligo town on the R292, below Knocknarea. The trip itself is short; what needs planning is the activity at the other end and where the vehicle waits.

About Strandhill

The road out
The R292 leaves Sligo to the west, crosses the N4, and runs out along the Coolera peninsula to Strandhill. The passage tombs at Carrowmore, about 5 km from town, are a short detour on the way. Beach traffic builds on sunny afternoons and summer weekends, which can stretch the 15 minutes.
At the seafront
The village is built around the promenade and the beach car parks, which fill quickly on warm weekends. The driver sets down close to the seafront and confirms where the vehicle waits. Surf schools, the seaweed baths and cafés are all within a short walk of the front.
Water safety
Strandhill is a surf beach, not a swimming beach. Sligo County Council warns that the strand is dangerous for swimming, bathing and paddling because of strong rip currents, and no lifeguard is on duty. School and youth groups should keep to supervised surf lessons and stay out of the water otherwise. Make sure every adult leader knows this before you arrive.
Knocknarea and kit
Knocknarea, with its great summit cairn, rises behind the village. A walking party can be dropped at the start of the trail and collected afterwards in Strandhill; ask the operator to confirm the trailhead. For surf groups, a 16-seater minibus carries a small party with wetsuits and bags, and a 29 to 35-seat midi coach suits a school class. Wet kit goes in bags or in the hold, not loose on the seats.
Can the vehicle wait while we surf?
For a lesson of two hours or so, the vehicle can wait or go back to Sligo and return; the arrangement is on the quote. Share the lesson times so the collection fits them.
Is Strandhill worth visiting outside summer?
Yes. Surfers come all year, and the Atlantic swell is often at its biggest in autumn and winter. The village is quieter then, so check which cafés and baths are open before you go.
