Airport Transfers in Tralee
Tralee’s airport is Kerry, at Farranfore, about 15 km south-east of the town. This guide covers that short run, the longer trip north to Shannon, and the Tralee dates and venues that change how a group is collected.
The Farranfore run from Tralee
Kerry Airport sits between Tralee and Killarney, a drive of 15 to 20 minutes from each. From Tralee the coach leaves on the N22 Killarney road, reaches Farranfore and takes the short N23 link to the terminal, with no tolls. On the way back in, hotels in Ballyard and on the Killarney road are the first ones reached, which makes them the quickest drops; the town centre streets are tighter, and Fenit, out on Tralee Bay, adds a little more. At the airport a single bus terminus sits directly outside the main building, and that is where a booked vehicle loads and sets down. For anyone coming by rail, Farranfore station is a 1.4 km hop from the airport.
When the flight is from Shannon or Cork
Some routes only leave from Shannon. The quicker road is the N21 east through Castleisland, Abbeyfeale, Newcastle West and Adare to Limerick, about 105 km, then the N18 west through the tolled Limerick Tunnel to the airport. The estuary road, the N69 by Listowel, Tarbert and Foynes, is slower, though the Foynes Flying Boat Museum makes a stop worth having. Groups that want west Clare as well can cross the estuary on the Tarbert–Killimer car ferry, which carries coaches: the crossing takes about 20 minutes, and the usual pattern is sailings from Killimer on the hour and from Tarbert on the half hour. Cork lies about ninety minutes by road from Farranfore, so add the run from Tralee to that.
Rose of Tralee week
In August the Rose of Tralee festival fills the town, and the road closures shape every collection. The Mall and Bridge Street are closed to traffic for the whole festival, and Denny Street, The Square and neighbouring streets close in the evenings. Bus Éireann’s Denny Street stops by the Ashe Memorial Hall go unserved during the festival. A group landing at Kerry that week should find out from the hotel which vehicle entrance remains usable and tell the operator. Hotels fill early, and so do vehicles, so book both as soon as the dates are fixed. Outside festival week, groups come for Siamsa Tíre, the National Folk Theatre in the Town Park, and for Kerry matches at Austin Stack Park.
Links golf and the Dingle road
Tralee is a base for north Kerry golf. Ballybunion is about 32 km away, roughly 35 minutes, so a golf group can land at Farranfore and be on the first tee the same day. Golf bags take far more room than suitcases, and a full minibus with clubs on board runs out of rear space, so state the number of bags as well as golfers. A coach with underfloor bays solves it, or ask whether a separate luggage vehicle can follow a minibus. Groups heading for the Dingle Peninsula can carry on from the airport past Tralee on the N86, about 50 km and an hour further, without unloading. Banna Strand, about 15 minutes north-west, is a short stop on a fine arrival day.
Is Kerry Airport closer to Tralee or to Killarney?
Roughly equal: Farranfore is 15 to 20 minutes by road from each town. From Tralee the airport is roughly 15 km south-east on the N22, so a group based in Tralee keeps both the arrival and the departure transfer short.
Can a coach use the Tarbert–Killimer ferry?
Yes. The ferry across the Shannon Estuary carries coaches as well as cars, and the crossing takes about 20 minutes. It suits a group touring west Clare and north Kerry together, rather than a direct run to Shannon Airport, where the road via Limerick is usually the plan.
What changes if we arrive during the Rose of Tralee?
Expect closed streets in the centre: The Mall and Bridge Street for the whole festival, Denny Street and The Square in the evenings. Ask your hotel which entrance stays open and tell the operator, so the driver plans the set-down around the closures.
