Airport Transfers in Limerick

Shannon is Limerick’s airport, around 25 minutes west of the city on the N18. Here is how a hired coach or minibus meets a group at the terminal, how the run differs for each side of the city, and what to plan for on the way home.

Why Limerick groups fly through Shannon

Shannon Airport is about 25 to 27 km from Limerick, close enough that a city group rarely considers anywhere else. Kerry Airport, around ninety minutes off by road, only suits a party that is ending its trip in Kerry. Dublin is the alternative when the route a group needs does not fly from Shannon. That means the M7 the whole way across the midlands, through the toll plaza in County Laois, and then the M50, where the stretch between junctions 7 and 6 is tolled by camera. Expect well over two hours of driving. A coach sets down outside Terminal 2 departures at Dublin and collects arrivals only from the Zone 16 coach park.

The Shannon coach parks

Shannon’s rule is firm: the kerb in front of the terminal is off limits to parked coaches and minibuses, whatever the hour. Group vehicles sit in one of two coach and bus parks instead; hired minibuses and limousines share Coach Park 2, beside departures. That leaves two ways to meet a group. Either the driver comes into arrivals and walks everyone out, or the group leader brings the party to the agreed coach park. Decide which before travel day and pass it to everyone on the list. With a flight number, the operator follows the real landing time, and any waiting terms are written on the quote.

Ennis Road first, Castletroy last

From the terminal the N19 leads to the N18, and the coach runs east past Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, about ten minutes from the airport, into Limerick. Hotels on the Ennis Road are reached first, then the riverside and the city centre. Castletroy and the University of Limerick, home to the University Concert Hall, sit on the far eastern side, so a conference group bound for the campus should allow extra time for the city crossing. The Limerick Tunnel, which carries a toll, only comes into the route if the group is staying south of the river or heading on towards Adare. For a departure, set the hotel pickup by working back from the airline’s check-in time.

Thomond Park and the 2027 Ryder Cup

Limerick’s busiest airport days follow its fixtures. Thomond Park, home to Munster Rugby, holds about 25,600 and also hosts concerts, and the TUS Gaelic Grounds sit on the Ennis Road, right on the airport side of the city. The largest event ahead is the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor, with competition on 17 to 19 September 2027. The Adare Manor estate is open only to its own patrons, meaning guests, diners and shoppers, so a coach carrying visitors needs the resort’s or the event’s own access arrangements. The National Ploughing Championships moved a week later that year to avoid clashing with it. Book vehicles for that week early.

Flying home to the United States

Anyone flying on to the United States completes American immigration and customs checks in Shannon’s preclearance area ahead of boarding, a step most airports do not have. That makes the time between arriving at the terminal and reaching the gate longer than a group might expect, so follow the airline’s advice on how early to check in and set the hotel pickup from that, not from the departure time. A coach collecting from several hotels should start with the one furthest from the airport, usually Castletroy, and finish on the Ennis Road. Tell the operator the airline as well as the flight number, since advice on arrival times differs between carriers.

Do we pay a toll on the way from Shannon to the city?

Not on the direct N18 route into the city centre or the Ennis Road. The Limerick Tunnel is tolled, but it only comes into the journey if the group is staying south of the Shannon or travelling on to Adare, Kerry or Cork.

Can we stop at Bunratty on the way in from the airport?

Yes. Bunratty Castle and Folk Park is beside the N18, about ten minutes from Shannon, which suits a group whose rooms are not ready until the afternoon. Mention the stop when you book so the vehicle is held for the longer day.

Do we need to book early for Ryder Cup week?

Yes. The competition runs from 17 to 19 September 2027 at Adare Manor, and demand for coaches across Limerick and Clare will be high. Tell the operator the flight dates, the hotel and the access arrangements you have from the event as soon as you have them.
