Airport Transfers in Letterkenny
Letterkenny has two small airports within an hour, City of Derry across the border to the east and Carrickfinn, Donegal’s own airport, out west, with Dublin about three hours south. The flight decides which one a group uses, and each transfer is a different kind of drive.
Three airports, three directions
City of Derry Airport is the nearest, about 40 minutes east, and it is in Northern Ireland, so the transfer crosses the border and the money changes to sterling. Carrickfinn, home of Donegal Airport, is roughly 45 minutes west by road. It is a small airport whose scheduled flights go to Dublin, with Aer Lingus, and to Glasgow, with Loganair on certain days of the week, so check the current timetable. Dublin Airport, about 240 km away, has by far the widest choice of routes, at around three hours by coach. A group with an onward connection can also fly Carrickfinn to Dublin and change there rather than make the long road trip.
Over the border to Derry
The coach takes the N13 east, bypassing Manorcunningham and Newtowncunningham, and crosses into Northern Ireland at Bridgend, where the road becomes the A2. It follows the Buncrana Road into Derry, crosses the Foyle and continues out to the airport. There are no routine checks at the border, though once over the line, signs and limits are in miles per hour. Even so, Irish and British passengers need photo ID with them, and anyone holding another passport should look up UK entry requirements, the Electronic Travel Authorisation among them. The airport has one terminal; group vehicles pick up and set down on the forecourt in front of it, under the airport’s published terms of use, which the operator deals with.
The long road to Dublin
For Dublin the coach takes the N13 to Manorcunningham and the N14 to Lifford, crosses the bridge into Northern Ireland at Strabane and follows the A5 through County Tyrone, past Omagh, to re-enter the Republic near Aughnacloy. From there the N2 runs south through Monaghan and Ardee. The driver either stays on the N2 through Slane to the M50 at junction 5, or swings across to the M1 by the N33 north of Ardee, the line Transport Infrastructure Ireland suggests for heavy vehicles; both reach the airport without the M50 toll. A return in a day exceeds four and a half hours of driving, so a 45-minute break is built in. At Dublin, coaches set down outside Terminal 2 and collect only from Zone 16.
Letterkenny groups and their luggage
Letterkenny has no railway, so arriving groups depend on the road transfer. Hotels are mainly in the centre near Main Street and out along the Port Road, and the coach drops at each door it can reach. Others head straight out: Glenveagh National Park is about 30 minutes away, where vehicles go no further than the visitor centre car park and the park’s shuttle bus runs on to the castle, with group visits booked online. Grianán of Aileach, on the road towards Derry, is about 25 minutes. Count luggage early. A 16 to 19-seat minibus suits a small party with a case each; a band, a sports team with kit or a golf group needs a coach with underfloor bays.
Which is the nearest airport to Letterkenny?
City of Derry, at about 40 minutes, is slightly nearer than Donegal Airport at Carrickfinn, about 45 minutes. Carrickfinn’s scheduled flights go to Dublin and Glasgow, so check which airport has the route you need. Dublin Airport is about three hours by road.
Do we need passports to use City of Derry Airport?
There are no routine border checks between Donegal and Derry, but Irish and British travellers should still bring photo identification. Holders of other passports should find out before booking whether the UK requires them to hold an Electronic Travel Authorisation for the trip.
Does the Dublin transfer pass through Northern Ireland?
Usually, yes. The main road line goes through Strabane and along the A5 through Tyrone before rejoining the N2 near Aughnacloy. There are no checks, but the speed signs are in miles per hour on that stretch, and passengers should carry ID.
