Airport Transfers in Kilkenny
Kilkenny is about 130 km from Dublin Airport, an hour and a half to an hour and three quarters by coach, nearly all of it motorway. Weddings, hurling weekends and touring groups make up much of the traffic, and the medieval street plan shapes the Kilkenny end of every transfer.
Why Dublin, and when Cork
Dublin is the airport for Kilkenny in almost every case, with the most flights and the most direct road. Cork Airport is further away by road, but a group already planning to tour the south can land there and travel east. Waterford Airport, the nearest, currently has no scheduled passenger service; works to lengthen its runway are under way, and the airport is aiming for flights again in 2027, so check before planning around it. If the group is split between airports, tell the operator: two separate transfers are usually easier than one vehicle shuttling between them.
The motorway run north
From Kilkenny the coach takes the N10 ring road to the M9 and follows it north past Carlow and Athy to meet the M7 near Kilcullen. The M9 carries no toll and has few hold-ups. Past Naas the M7 leads to the Red Cow interchange, where the coach turns north on the M50. Heading north from Lucan to Blanchardstown it runs through the M50’s cashless toll section; the charge is paid later, by tag or account or on the eFlow website by 8pm the day after. The M50 is the part of the trip that varies most, so an arrival in the middle of the day is the easiest to time and a weekday evening peak the hardest.
Arriving at Dublin and setting off home
Kilkenny wedding guests often land in waves over a day or two. List every flight with the number on board, and the operator will advise whether to hold a coach for a cluster of landings or to send a minibus for each smaller wave. The pickup is always in the Zone 16 coach park, which passengers reach on foot from either terminal once they have their bags. Drivers wait there rather than at the kerb and track the flight number, so a delay simply moves the collection. For the flight home, the coach drops at the T2 Departures Road Inner; Terminal 1 passengers walk over, as coaches cannot use the T1 departures road.
Medieval streets and country houses
The county council’s coach spaces are on Castle Road, on its east side approaching the castle. At busy times the overflow goes to Larchfield, and the Abbey Quarter has more coach parking. High Street and the lanes off the Medieval Mile are narrow, so a coach serving a city-centre hotel normally stops at one of those points and guests walk with their cases. Plenty of parties are based outside the city, in country houses and wedding venues near Thomastown and along the Nore. Approach roads there are slower, and a midi coach fits some entrances more easily than a full-length coach. Send the venue address with the booking, and say if the vehicle is needed again on the wedding day itself.
Match days and awkward luggage
A group that lands in the morning and heads for a game at UPMC Nowlan Park, the county hurling ground, needs the throw-in time on the booking as well as the flight. Golfers, touring groups and wedding parties each bring their own awkward items: club bags, hurleys and kit, outfits in carriers. A full-size coach’s underfloor hold takes a case per passenger comfortably; a minibus of 16 to 19 seats keeps bags in a much smaller rear compartment that fills quickly. Give the operator the passenger count and the number of large items together, so the vehicle is sized for both.
How long does Dublin Airport to Kilkenny take?
Plan on an hour and a half to an hour and three quarters to the city, longer at peak times on the M50 and for a country venue beyond Kilkenny. The operator sets the timing once it has the flight number and the address you are going to.
Can the coach stop outside our hotel on the Medieval Mile?
Rarely right outside. Coaches pull in at the council spaces, on Castle Road, at Larchfield or at the Abbey Quarter, and guests carry their bags the last few minutes. If your hotel has a car park of its own, mention it, as that usually allows a closer drop.
Can we fly into Cork and home from Dublin?
Yes. Book each leg as its own transfer and give both flight numbers. The Cork leg is the longer drive, so allow for it on the arrival day, especially after a long flight. The operator can quote both legs in one request.
