Airport Transfers in Cork

Cork Airport sits about 8 km south of the city centre, so most groups staying in Cork land and leave there. This guide covers the bays a hired vehicle uses, the run in each direction, and the trips that start or end somewhere other than a city hotel.

The city’s own airport, and the Dublin exception

For a Cork group the choice of airport is usually made by the map: the terminal is a short drive from the centre, while Kerry and Shannon are each well over an hour away. Dublin enters the picture when the flight the group needs only leaves from there, a long-haul connection for instance. That transfer follows the M8 north from the Dunkettle Interchange and the M7 into Dublin, passing the Rathcormac–Fermoy and Portlaoise–Cullahill toll points, then the M50 with its camera toll between junctions 7 and 6. The drive to the Dublin city edge alone is about two and three-quarter hours, so the airport run is close to three, and the M50 is where delays build. At Dublin the coach sets passengers down outside Terminal 2 departures, and an arriving group is collected only from the Zone 16 coach park.

Bus Bays C and D

Cork has a single terminal, and all bus and coach traffic uses the front of it. Private-hire coaches and minibuses are asked to use Bays C and D there, both when dropping off a departing party and when loading an arriving one. In practice that keeps the walk short: arrivals come out of the front doors and the vehicle is right there, and on the way out the group steps off a few metres from check-in. Give the operator the flight number, the scheduled time and the head count, and name a group leader with a mobile the driver can call. When a party is spread across two or three flights, say which names are on each, so the operator can decide between one wait and several shorter runs.

The N27 South Link, both ways

Leaving the bays, the coach heads north on the N27 South Link Road, through the N40 South Ring Road junction and on towards the quays. Off-peak it is roughly a quarter of an hour; on a weekday morning or evening allow nearer thirty minutes, and more again for each extra hotel. For a departure, start from the airline’s check-in deadline, subtract the drive and the hotel calls, and keep a cushion for the South Link, which queues at rush hour. Groups lodged in Douglas, Blackrock or Mahon, or at the hotels next to the airport, stay out of most city traffic. For Little Island and Fota Island, east of the city, the driver takes the N40 to the Dunkettle Interchange rather than crossing the centre.

Ships, golf and fixtures

Plenty of Cork airport transfers never touch the city. Cruise passengers flying in or out travel between the terminal and Cobh, about 25 km and roughly half an hour, where ships tie up on the quay beside the Cobh Heritage Centre; larger vessels may use Ringaskiddy Deepwater Quay across the harbour, so check the berth on the port’s schedule first. Kinsale lies south of the airport along the R600, which makes it a natural first stop for golfers and food tours before the hotel. Teams and supporters heading to Munster at Virgin Media Park, or to a match or concert at Páirc Uí Chaoimh in Ballintemple, should send the fixture time with the flight, because event traffic changes the city approach.

How long does the airport to city centre run take?

Around fifteen minutes on clear roads and up to half an hour in the weekday peaks. The scheduled airport bus allows about 25 minutes to Parnell Place, which is a fair guide on a busy day. Each extra hotel stop adds a few minutes on top.

Can a coach take us straight from Cork Airport to a ship at Cobh?

Yes. Send the ship name, the berth if known and the all-aboard time along with the flight. Cobh is about half an hour from the terminal, but a ship at Ringaskiddy is reached by a different road, so the operator needs to know which quay before setting the timings.

What happens to our luggage on a minibus?

On a minibus seating 16 to 19, bags go in a rear hold of roughly two cubic metres: fine for one case each in a small party, tight once golf bags or instruments are added. Larger vehicles, from a 29 to 35-seat midi coach up to a full-size coach, put luggage in underfloor holds. Give a bag count when you ask.
